Our Groovy New Westy

We have a new addition to our family…a sweet 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia Deluxe Camper Bus. Oh yes. We are so excited! Ready to camp, camp, camp! Matt flies to Boise, ID to pick it up next Friday. More pics here.

First of all, NICE RIDE! Second, I have to apologize for imposing a question on you, but I have a green 77 westy deluxe that I just got in April and am in the planning stages of a complete restore and and and…do you know whether the alternator in your bus (identical engine to mine as far as I can see) is a 55 or 70 amp and do you have two batteries running? If you don’t want to reply, I understand. I googled “77 vw westfalia deluxe” and found your blog here, by the way :)

ggloyd: I will have my husband answer this one!

I am not sure the size of the alternator but my guess would be a 70 because I have two batteries. One to run the camper side and the other to start the bus. If you have more questions http://www.thesamba.com forum is great. If you post something someone will answer.

I hope this helps, good luck on your rebuild. Let me know how it goes.

Hey! I had a green version of this wonderful vehicle. I lived in it for about 6 monts in California, before I married and moved to Boulder! I loved living in my van and driving up and down the coast. I also loved Boulder. I would often take my kids to Wild Oats and we’d enjoy tofu eggrolls and other yummies outside while we gazed up at the beautiful flatirons.

I have a poem (in which I mention the days when I lived in my van) that you might enjoy. It is called “I’d Travel America If I Weren’t So Poor.”
