Wow Charity...very insightful. Thanks for sharing that. You've definitely given ME something to think about! The spiritual side of consumption is so complex...and it takes some soul searching to discover those things inside of yourself and act to make change.

And consumerism isn't just a social and economic problem.

Here's how it eats away at my spirit . . . My need to acquire and hoard may mean I don't trust God to provide. My need to own the most or the best or the first may mean I'm greedy. My desire for "new" things may mean I'm too lazy to practice stewardship. My desire for things at a cost to others may mean I think more highly of myself than I should. My propensity to waste shows my ingratitude.

I could go on, but it's painful. Needless to say, Sara, you've got me thinking.

Awesome post, sara. It really is disturbing when we find out all that we are actually supporting with our money. That is one are that my kids have been influenced to participate in the Compact, to understand that when they pay for something, they not simply paying for "the thing". They are then active participants in whatever is behind the scenes to produce "the thing".

Thanks for the recommendation. I remember Alan Thurning talking about his cup of coffee in Affluenza (or was it Escape from Affluenza?). I really like Alan Durning's writing. This Place On Earth is another good read by him.

I would say 90% of our clothing comes from thrift stores. You can even buy brand new underwear!
