Low Impact Week
Filed under: Activism, Environmentalism, Green Living

Greetings from the middle of Nebraska! We are at camp this week, and I am without a consistent Internet connection. I wanted to quickly post this reminder about Low Impact Week, which begins on June 1 and runs through June 7. Here are a few specific tips from Crunchy Chicken to get you started…please check her site out for more information.
For those of you who want to be more “green”, but don’t know where to begin, this “challenge” is a great starting point. You can do ANYTHING for one week, right? Just choose one item from each category (on her site) to start…and hopefully after that, some of these habits will remain for longer. Be sure to report your progress here (and on your blog of course!).
You can also check out Greenpa’s Planet Party (yes, Greenpa is the guy who doesn’t have a fridge!) and the ladies at Simple Living and Casaubon’s Book are hosting Lowering 93%. It’s so encouraging to see this grassroots movement taking place…everyone’s little actions add up to BIG CHANGE!
I’ll be starting to blog more again after June 5…see you then!

This is the first time I’ve heard about Low Impact Week. What a great idea! I’m going to take a few new actions myself and spread the word.

Thanks for the head up for Low Impact week, I’d like to get my family headed in that direction! We’re in Nebraska as well, but not because we’re at camp…we just live here, lol. But, my husband and I actually met at Camp Luther, where we both worked for three years during college, it’s up in the Columbus/Schuyler area. We’ve been to the Maranatha camp, and also Timberlake and way out to Camp Comeca. Yay for Christian camp ministry! We LOVE it! We’d like to work there again some day as a family, but, we’ll see what God’s plan is. ;O) Hope you’re enjoying this cool, wet weather here in NE!

Just found your blog! It’s great to find another follower of Jesus who considers it of great importance to care for the earth he created. I’ll check back in regularly!

Does not having time to take a shower two days in a row count?
We already do a lot of the things on her list, but I never heard of putting a bucket in the shower when you’re waiting for the water to heat up, then using that water for other household tasks. That’s a good one. I’ll have to try that.
This summer we plan to focus on potty-training the four-year-old, which will mean fewer diaper loads per week.

Hi. New here. I have been changing to some of these things over the course of the last few months. I love knowing that I am making this world a better place for my kids as they get older just by changing a few things in my everyday life.
I have been using some great bags from reusable bags.com and I just love them. I have found that in addition to the bags that using a milk crate for my can goods has really helped as well.

I joined low-impact week too. Thanks for the reminder! I have a length of fabric for cloth napkins drying on the porch, and now I’m off to track down some cloth grocery bags.

Good timing! I didn’t even realize it was Low Impact week, but this was the week I decided to try riding the bus to work rather than driving. Day one went well! Thanks for continuing to encourage us all toward caring broadly for the world God made.

Sara, Most interesting! I always learn so much when I visit your blog. You seem to have vast and varied interests and acquaintences which I find most inspiring. It could be said of you that you have never met a stranger, and that is good. I am pleased that you are so happy and pray that your contentment continue to bloom and grow. May you be gripped by grace and blessed beyond your dreams.

Wow, I checked out the no fridge man, pretty cool. I just can’t see myself without my fridge. 1 we just got a one off craigslist and 2 we live 20 min from town,… excuses excuses.
I am excited to present this as a one week challenge to my husband, I brought up the idea of reusable tp and he thinks Im nuts!!!

The idea of just choosing one thing is wonderful. Indeed, I think this is how I’ve made most of my green changes… one at a time.

Street trees and bioretention are longer term methods of low impact development. It’s something developers should do as they create housing.
