Earth Party

Community Eats

Summer is the perfect time to eat outside and create community. I love eating with friends…and eating OUTSIDE with friends is even better. However, summertime is notorious for creating mounds and mounds of party trash. My friend, Rebecca, is throwing a “Stop Global Warming” Party this month. What a great way to create awareness and have fun! I encourage all of you to throw your own “Earth Party”! Here are a few things you could incorporate:

  • Encourage party-goers to ride their bikes, walk, or carpool.
  • Have everyone bring their own non-disposable plates, cups (or water bottles) and utensils.
  • Have speakers from local environmental groups (Rebecca has the Sierra Club Student Coalition coming to hers)
  • Make it a vegetarian potluck…meat production is a huge problem for the environment!
  • Serve organic, raw fruits and veggies
  • Have a tree planting ceremony
  • Send invites by email to avoid paper trash

Have a great time at your Earth Parties…I’d love to hear how they go!

I’m looking forward to Rebecca’s party!

I don’t consider chemical-free, 100 percent grass-fed meat production to be bad for the environment, but I understand the point you are making. Conventional meat production is certainly bad for the environment.

Laurie…I wish I would still be around for the party! We’re headed back to Montana today. You’ll have to have TWICE the fun for me :)

i’m always up for throwing a party…although most of my friends aren’t very green like I am! Our time might be mostly awkward?? How does one throw a earth party with friends who just don’t really care or see the need??

I’m new to blogging and have been surfing blogs by other Christians. I love the fact that you’re writing about “green living” as well! I can’t say I’m the “greenest” person around, but I am trying! I look forward to browsing through your blog!

By the way, isn’t Bozeman beautiful?! My sister-in-law is from there. When she married my husband’s brother, that’s where the wedding was. I’d love to go back!

I LOVE the idea of “Earth Party”!!! I can’t wait to throw my own – I am thinking of even making jam as favors. Made with locally grown berries (goes hand in hand with my local food month challenge). Thanks for posting this great idea!!! I ENJOY your blog!!! Thanks for sharing :)

How about an Earth birthday party? (I’ve got one coming up this Saturday.) A few years ago, I decided that there were no rules about using paper or plastic plates at a party. Now we just use the china and our silverware. Funny too… it feels like we are doing something real together.

Happy Early Birthday!! Weeeeee! Another fun for a little girl’s birthday is to go a thrift store and get inexpensive tea cups, etc. and throw a little tea party. Then, for the favor, all the girls get to take home their own little tea set to play with at home. Recycled, earth friendly, fun! :)

Yes, Kristi…I had seen that article, but re-reading it was good. Thanks for sharing it, it’s really crazy.

I agree with commenter 2 – grassfed small livestock farms are not a problem for the environment, but infact help it. however, I think this is a fabulous idea!! have fun!

I am no expert on “green living”. I do make efforts to conserve. I also inform others of ways they can conserve. My family has cattle & hog farms. We also have crops.

Ever heard the phrase “everbody do your share.” I rest well at night after eating a steak that was raised on our farm. I ate this steak on a real plate, I didn’t run to the store to purchase it, so I didnt use fuel, no plastic bag from the store.

I just want all the meat eaters out there to know that when you purchase your meats, and other foods locally you can help to conserve.

I think that it is important that people do a little. Our chances of making a huge difference are greater when we ask others to make small changes that can still somewhat fit their currnet life. Everyone doing a little adds up to a lot.

So, what Im saying is support your local farmers and you will save the fuel from huge cattle farms to transport meats. I dont believe that the big production cattle farms are a good thing. Our cows are put out to pasture, they are healthy, happy, and our livleyhood.

I for one cannot look into the eyes of my father in law and see his overworked hands, broken back, sore feet and tell him that what he is doing is wrong. His entire life he has slaved to feed his family with this meat and crop.

He is up at the crack of dawn working hard till dusk to take care of his land and animals. It is everything to him and I for one will not believe that it is wrong.

Ive never met another person that cares for the land the way that he does. I support that.

Im not trying to get “nasty”. Im just trying to make the point that farming isnt all wrong.

I totally agree in conserving this beautiful earth. I will use cloth instead of paper. I wont buy disposable picnic wear. When God blesses me with children I will make there food from our gardens and use reusable diapers. I will be sensible with my fuel using trips to town wisley. These are things that I can do and if i can do it trust me anyone can!

Thank you Sara for your post!

Thanks for that. We’re having a little potluck party this week, for Xmas I guess and I’ve been trying to find something unique.. found some awesome ideas at this potluck recipe site. You know, someone should invent a website where you can write what you’ll be taking, and it would check no one brings the same thing!
