The Minnie Winnie Renovations Revealed

minnie-winnie-renovations-5

Whew! It’s finished…our little 1983 Winnebago Diesel Minnie Winnie is officially on the road! We are currently in northern Minnesota staying with Matt’s parents. After that, we head to Minneapolis, then to Iowa to be with my family. Then on to Nebraska and Colorado to visit friends.

Here is a list of all the things my amazing husband upgraded in the RV:

  • Painted cupboards
  • Painted walls (with leftover paint from our house)
  • Installed bamboo hardwood flooring
  • Removed the stove and created shelving for more storage
  • Installed new countertop
  • Re-laminated dinette table
  • Slipcovered couch and dinette seating
  • Painted all hinges silver
  • Sewed new curtains for all windows
  • Installed new front seats
  • Replaced carpet in cab
  • Installed flat screen TV with built in DVD on a swing arm
  • Engine improvements: Installed new alternator
  • Upgraded entire electrical system

The practical details:

  • Matt and Bella share a closet for their clothes and Lucy and I share the other closet. The closets are the 2 cabinets on either side of the door.
  • The space under the countertop (where the oven used to be) houses my Vita-Mix, juicer, food processor, and other random items.
  • The only thing we didn’t update was the bathroom. The shower, sink, and toilet are all in one tiny room…you pull a shower curtain around everything to protect it from getting wet…so we didn’t want to paint those walls.
  • Bella rides in the passenger seat in her booster. Lucy rides in her car seat in the dinette (there are 2 seatbelts there).
  • All of my pantry foods and kitchen items fit nicely above the kitchen area. I was pleasantly surprised. The fridge is a dorm sized fridge, which is challenging at times. I’m sure it would be perfect for someone not doing raw foods, but for us it’s a little tight.
  • Fun fact: Matt sewed all of the curtains. Like I said, he’s amazing.

If you are a new reader to my blog, you might not know that this is our 3rd RV in 2 years :) Here are the other two renovations:

    As always, very beautiful.

A question. What resource do you use to print and frame your photograph? Do you do it inhouse or use an online service? Thanks!

That looks absolutely gorgeous!! I love it! I would love to turn our camper into one that looks like that. Would you care to share what paint you used on the walls and cabinets and how you nailed the pictures on the walls. I have been afraid to nail into mine, thinking it might ruin it. Thanks!

This is awesome! I’m glad to find in the comments why you’ve now had three RVs. I used to read your blog but then it fell off my radar for a while. So glad to find you! I often think of your patchwork bed quilt, because I’d like to make one like that for myself but have yet to do so. I fondly remember your photo of it in the Living Lightly tour RV…You guys are so inspiring in so many ways!

I was actually looking for a battery for my ‘new’ 1983 Minnie Winnie when I stumbled onto your site. In July 2009, my son and I drove a new Class A up to Anchorage for my sister we then bought their 1983 Minnie Winnie. They bought it from my stepdad and had it for about 5yrs, so it’s been in the ‘family’ for quite some time. It only had 72k miles on it when I got it. We drove it around Alaska for 5wks before we finally gave up and came back home to Kansas. Check out my blog: http://www.kansascigards.blogspot.com/ we had a fantastic time. I’m thinking about doing some remodeling, you’ve got great taste. Thanks for the pictures and ideas. It really does have possibilities.

Just bought an old RV & looking for redecorating inspiration when I found this site. I love it and cannot wait to get started! It wasn’t until about this last time (third) that I looked at the site and realized that you are also a mom & photographer. We have a few things in common…It’s no wonder I loved your design :) .

We(well mostly I on the decorating part-as he says just leave it like it is and use it-yea right!) are redecorating a ’90 model with mostly peach & blue decor-YUCK!, my qusetion is did you prime the walls before painting them or just go right on and paint? Also has anyone used laminate wood flooring? Would I have to worry about it getting wet and warping? So far I have made new curtains because the old ones shredded when I washed them. I am doing neon colors orange, purple, green, pink and considering painting yellow, lavender, and maybe orange spice colors with wood looking floors. Also wanted to let everyone know that wall words can be bought at Dollar Tree stores in the craft section.

So I’m a little late to this, I guess, but I came across this post while searching for RV remodels. My husband and I just bought a 1977 Class C Winnebago (for $1000!) and we’re wanting to fix it up. I LOVE what you guys have done with all of your spaces (I may have also browsed your flickr… :) ). How much did you spend on all the updates? Do you have any tips/advice for me?

Sometimes babies like to bite those toys. I wonder, is it really safe to use?
