Fancy Feet

Filed under: Health, Healthy Living, Running

I’m feeling a little euphoric today. I went on a RUN! Yes! I RAN! What’s the big deal, right? Well…I haven’t run for many years because I have trouble with my knees. I was an athlete in high school and whenever I was on a “work out kick” after I graduated, I would run the treadmill at the club. Somewhere in there, the knee pain started. It disappeared miraculously during my military basic training, but then it reappeared. I went to a physical therapist, tried shoe inserts, exercises, etc. But, the pain still held me back.

I’ve always had a high metabolism and haven’t had to work too hard to stay at a healthy weight. I do work hard on eating really clean, but any form of regular exercise routine has been lacking since Matt and I got married 10 years ago. I’ve always wanted to start again…and I’ve admired friends who gain such joy from running (…a big shout out to my girl Heather…who just signed up for her second marathon! Woot!). Running seems so great for me because it’s a “portable” sport and a simple way to stay healthy! Perfect for someone who is living in a small space without much room to exercise indoors.

I read somewhere that people were having good results running in Vibram FiveFinger shoes (the “barefoot alternative)…even those with knee/hip pain. I was thrilled and ordered some “Sprints” from REI immediately. After trying a couple different sizes, I finally settled into my very own pair of “gecko feet”, as my friend Christine calls them. They are different….but good. The reason they are supposed to be better is because your foot strikes the ground differently when you run in them…they strike mid-foot instead of heel first. This apparently lessens the impact on your body…and that’s about all the technical stuff I know about them.

I love being able to really feel the ground under my feet. I’ve always enjoyed going barefoot…but barefoot can hurt!! Yes, I have wimpy feet. This way, I can have the best of both worlds (I can’t write that phrase without singing Hannah Montana). I’ve been wearing them around during the day as well…not just for running. I can definitely see more of these in my future. The Classic version is so cute. Oh, and this purple pair...you know I love purple.

I’ve heard people talk about the Couch to 5K program for a long time, but I never paid much attention. “I’m not a runner”, I thought. But now, I’m on board with it! It seems like a perfect way to start back into a routine. I’ve even downloaded the iPhone C25K app.  On my days off, I plan on doing yoga and resistance exercises. This morning I set out on my first run…through the back country of Texas. The wildflowers were beautiful, the horses abundant, and the sunshine warm. The only thing about running out here is that people let their dogs roam free-range style. A very large white dog (resembling a horse) ran right up to me and freaked me out for a second. Luckily, he wasn’t hungry and he let me live another day.

I flew through the workout with very little pain and moments of great happiness. I’m sure I got a few weird looks from passersby as I belted out Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, and Elton John. But I loved every minute. And now that I’ve told you all of this, I’m obligated to stick to it. Maybe someday, I might even run a 5K race!

I’ve started a DailyMile account…is anyone else on there? If so, be my friend! :) I love any type of tracking program…it keeps me motivated. I’m also trying out the Two Hundred Squats program for iPhone as well. I’m gettin’ serious now! :)

I would love to hear about your experiences with the C25K program…and any thoughts you might have on running. I need all the encouragement I can get…Run, Sara, Run! :)

EEK! I love running and am glad that you are enjoying it so much. I don’t think the Vibram 5′s are for me, but if you love them, great!

I have that exact pair of 5 Finger shoes. Yes, I love them.

AND I did the Couch to 5k on my iPhone too! I never ran in my life – but got motivated after watching my sister who has rheumatoid arthritis run a MARATHON! I felt it was my duty to move this body!

The 5 Finger shoes really helps too – they are so much fun to run in! So I completed the couch to 5 program around Christmas, and now…. Training for a half- marathon! Frankly this is wild for me. I ran 10 miles for the first time in my life last weekend and this weekend is the half-marathon – 13.1 miles in my 5 Fingers! Very excited… And nervous!

I never could gave done this wthout the c2k iPhone app. It made all the difference.

I love the 5Fingers too–just started running again more regularly after injuries, babies, etc. They feel great and my body is responding well to the different impact of forefoot running. Keep at it! Hope to meet you in Brainerd this summer!

I’m on week 4 of the C25k training program and have really been enjoying myself. Due to some family in town and me feelin’ a bit down, I skipped last week :( but am back on in full force starting week 4 today!
I’ve never been an athlete myself and I absolutely agree with you regarding the benefits of taking up running versus another sport, but the potential for injury worries me a bit so I’m taking it super slow while I train for my first half-marathon later this year. :) A friend of mine and I are blogging about our journey together since we’re both total beginners: http://friscobeachblog.blogspot.com
I’m going to have to post something about those 5Fingers shoes, I’d never heard of those before! Glad you’re enjoying them.

I’m on week 3 of C25K and hubby and I are running a 5k in less than two weeks–on the weekends we’re “speeding up” the program a bit to get some longer run time in to be prepared for the actual 5k. I’ve done this before, on a treadmill, and when I tried to take it outside it killed me. Propelling yourself forward while running is way harder than running on a treadmill, I found out! So now I no longer belong to a gym and started outside and it’s going great. I love it. I have some knee issues too which is why the C25K program helps, and someday I’ll try those “shoes” (if you can call them that). They look great. Good luck with your running–it must feel great to get out of the RV and go for it!

    Sara,
Great job on your running goal! I wish you luck! You were talking about a 5K and maybe one day running one. . . I have the perfect one for you. Sherman Hill is putting on it’s FIRST ANNUAL 5K- “One Hill of a Run/Walk”, August 28th. All proceeds will go to a Sherman Hill Park we are building in the near future! I am very excited about this and wanted to share it with you! Not sure if you wull be in DSM at that time, but if you are, Balanced Life would love to sponsor you for the race!
Anyway, have fun training! Take care of your back and nervous system too!!
    Peace- Jen Sanford

Awesome Sara! My husband actually just bought himself a pair after drooling over them for quite a while now. He saw them mentioned in a running magazine. I was super glad to read your report on them though. I’ve been running routinely now since January–usually just loops that the hub and I mapped out, but lately I’ve been trying to do some sprints and work on speed. I did cross country in high school and I remember it was so much easier to be motivated for distance having a group together! :) I’m also interested in your experience over there in TX as you’re not too far from us here at Ft Polk and it’s definitely a transition going from the city to these rural areas. What you described is similar to the location & resources here. How I miss good ethnic food, Starbucks, & regular access to organic produce!!!! So glad you’re enjoying it—always positives everywhere!

Yeah…you have to grab some rocks to carry with you to throw at the dogs. That’s what my aunt does on her walks. :)

Yay, I got a pair today! I got to wear them around costco for about 30 minutes when I realized they were really scratching my left heel. I checked and three stitches were loose and and super rough, so I took them back for an exchange…and no more in my size :( Sad. Now I have to wait ’til next Thursday to get them. Thanks for letting us know about them.

Ever since your entry about these shoes they’ve been in the back of my mind. I just moved to Seattle a week ago and have been doing a LOT of walking and checking out the trails. I got a “normal” pair of shoes from REI, but they gave me 4 awful blisters! I finally decided I had to get the vibrams. I just ordered a pair today and cannot wait for them to arrive! Thank you for making me aware of these shoes.

Hey. I just ran my first 5K and I REALLY need new jogging shoes. I remembered this post and I came back to reread it. Are you still enjoying the shoes and would you recommend them?

I cant believe how awesome BEP’s new track is! The Time (Dirty Bit) is extremely catchy tho it sampled Bill Medley’s song! I cant wait until BEP drops their upcoming album at the end of November!

These shoes looks lightweight and super comfortable. I should get a pair. I love feeling the ground under my feet too but it’s impossible to go around barefoot sometimes as the ground is hot and my feet get dirty in some places. Thanks for sharing your funny feet!
