Shelter

Filed under: Alternative Housing, Books, Inspiration

One of my favorite books ever is a book by Lloyd Khan called “Homework“. If you’re at all interested in alternative housing…you will love it too. It’s completely inspiring and beautiful. So…you can imagine I was thrilled to come across this lovely video about his work. Enjoy!

He has written several books about alternative housing…check them out below.

I suppose I should add that our dome was handbuilt by my Mom and Dad, and we ‘recycled’ it 4 years ago… we moved it 30 miles. :)

Love that book! I’m trying to figure out what kind of structure I want to create as part of my pregnancy nesting project – I’ve got a part cob/straw bale/salvaged wood quasi-treehouse plan in mind, that’s super small, but perfect for one big (and one not-so-big) person…ah, dreams…

This is great, thanks for sharing! Reminds me of Dan Phillips. He builds houses out of recycled materials and unusual designs. My friend rents this tree house in Texas that he built:

We almost bought a dome house in Colorado 4 years ago–it was pretty awesome but thankfully God had different plans for us! I am obsessed with homes that can be built affordable and alternatively.

The best part was watching him skate through the burbs! Oh my word what a desolate place, everyone at work running the hamster wheel while this old man possess’ the secret to simple life. awesome.

Found you through Collecting the Moments. This video was amazing. I never heard of the guy but what an inspiration. Most of us would just go out and buy the $15 door handle from the hardware store but he used that bent tree branch he probably stumbled on while out walking. Even his house – everything so simple yet so highly functional. And he’s right about the hippie mindset – gads! The things I could accomplish if I didn’t have to blow 8 hours a day at work! Thanks for the motivation – I’m going to look for the book.

    Hey Sara,
If you are into different kinds of houses you should visit a small Island off the coast of Vancouver. It is called Hornby Island. There are many people that have very interesting houses. The people there come from all walks of life. A very warm place to be. I would go in the summer if i was you . the winter the island is mostly dead and all the tourists are gone.. thanks for sharing your blog Ive been a reader for some time now.
