Nighttime Equation

Filed under: Books, Daily Life, Motherhood

Hot bath + red wine + new book = A blissful end to my day.

Tell me about your favorite part of that equation…

Do you have a bedtime or bath routine?
What is your favorite wine or bedtime beverage?
What are you reading right now that you LOVE?

Preferrably a hot bath with or without a glass of wine and a good book. Always a read before sleep, can’t go without and it has to be in bed, which sometimes annoys husband since he is the sleepy sort;-) And I don’t like the tiny reading lights.

Tara – ha ha, sounds a little like me at the moment – toddler to sleep, then create till I can’t see straight! Just getting in what I can before number 2 comes along.

As for rituals, I don’t think I really have enough of them. I can answer the reading question with book six of the Earths Children series, that I discovered when I was 13, and have been waiting for the final book for…. The last 9 years? So I found a cheap hardcover copy of the Land of Painted Caves and am hoeing int it. This had better be the last one, I dont think I could take another 9 year wait between installments!

Just found your website. I love it. I’m slowly making my way through the archives.
My favorite bedtime ritual is my soft bed with a cup of tea or ice water (depending on the season) and right now I’m reading through the Alan Bradley series. I also recently read Michael Pollan on my Nookcolor.
    Love that thing!!

So tea helps you relax to sleep. Ok, I’m going to try that. I’ve been having a tequila nightcap. It’s good, but maybe not all that good for me. Thanks for this post Sara.

Just read Forgotten God by Francis Chan. So so so good!!! I love it and I suggest it to pretty much everyone I see right now. I guess it’s one of those books that just resonates with my soul

–hot shower (additionally blissful sans 4 year old)
–a good movie (although my son and husband think a 1970′s King Kong vs. Godzilla is classic cinema, I don’t always agree)
–trying to stay awake later than my 4 year old(99% unsuccessful, the kid is a night owl and won’t sleep more than 7 or 8 hours…ever)

I love hot baths with epsom salts. I’m more of a white wine person, but I don’t drink that much. There’s a white wine that I really like that can’t remember the name, but what matters is that my husband remembers the name because he’s the one who buys it for me, ha!
I want to read a book for myself! Currently I’m reading a lot of homeschooling material books. But in a couple of months I’ll start a good book just for me. I put this book that you are reading on my wishlist on Amazon so I can get it in a couple of months. It sounds interesting!

No real rituals here though I’m working tea into the nighttime mix to help me settle. I am reading through the gospels on an iPhone app called YouVision. I’ve really enjoyed the app as it’s kept me on better track with regular bible reading. Go figure it took a phone app to do that. Though, it does show the creative ways God works to get our attention!

Oh my gosh, I am currently reading Ann Voskamp’s new book. Soooo good. Our nighttime ritual is put baby down, hubby makes us some lattes (he is a magical coffee crafter) and then we put on some music and read our prospective books. Wow, I just realized how happy I am at nighttime. So thankful for rest and reflection. Such a fun part of the day when I can be wife/friend and have a break from being just mama.

The only time I get a good hot bath is when we go over to my husband’s parents’ house. They have a jacuzzi tub. Our tub is short and the end isn’t slated so I can’t rest against it comfortably.

Our bedtime routine: family prayer, lights off, lay Jude down and rub his belly till he’s asleep, cover him with a blanket and tiptoe to bed (he just transitioned to a crib in our room) and pay like mad that he doesn’t wake up from the sound of his blanket crinkling or me tiptoeing. ;)

My husband John & I have had the same ritual for 20 years! Glass of red wine in front of the fire or we light candles or both. Then snuggle up and talk about our day. Great way to wind down before bed :)

Hard cider (made with love by my husband) + bath + great book = wonderful end to what is usually a crazy, loud, nonstop day

Nearly every night I settle into a hot bath filled with Dr. Teal’s ‘Sensuality’ Epsom Salts, with a glass of red wine and a good book. For the past year I’ve been obsessed with the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (HIGHLY recommend it!!) but need to find something new to tide me over until her next book comes out .. maybe I’ll check out one of the suggestions above!

That looks/sounds sooo delightful. I am working on getting all 5 kids in bed by a decent time, but we haven’t enforced a strict bedtime up until now… so I usually climb in bed once they are all sleeping & eat a late snack, and then fall asleep reading.
I’m currently reading “The Unschooling Happiness Project” and “Crazy Sexy Diet” (but it takes me WAY too long to get through a book). And every now & then, I love a glass of white zin. :)

Bedtime routine- sadly, most of the time it’s catching up on facebook! ha! (or my favorite blogs, like WSLW!!)

Favorite wine- something white and sweet, so far the best has been a moscato.

Book I’m reading- Ann Lamott’s “Blue Shoe”, but recently started “The War of Art” (NOT the Art of War, haha).

It’s crazy, kick your butt into action kind of stuff about life and your passions and your creativity.) I highly highly recommend it. http://www.stevenpressfield.com/the-war-of-art/
