A Quiet House

Filed under: Daily Life, House Tour, Life in Longmont

Our house is quiet today.

Dan and Laura flew home Monday.
Nana and Papa left this morning.
Bella is out running errands with Jess.
Lucy is asleep.

I wanted to share a photo of my new “Happy Wall” with you. I printed out a bunch of photos from our travels taken with the ShakeItPhoto app on my iPhone. Matt hung some ribbons on the wall and then we secured them with some clothespins. I love having our favorite memories out there for us to see every day!

Speaking of photos, I don’t even want to think about how long it’s going to take to edit all the photos I took this weekend! :) We’re slowly getting back into our normal routine after having such an enormous amount of fun!

And now, I think I will put down the computer and settle into my corner for a cup of hot tea and a good book.

I absolutely love this idea. I have a bare wall in my living room just screaming for something, but it takes me years (literally) to get prints into frames and hung up! Your idea is much better, and cuter, and cheaper. I might have to copy this! :)

Love this. We have something similar for our kids art work and our sketches to hang over the couch. I should take a picture and post on our blog!!

We do something similar in our kids’ rooms. They have magnet boards secured to the walls beside their beds. We gave them each about 10 magnets, and give them a few new photos from time to time, and they can pick which ones they want to stick on their magnet boards. But now I’m inspired by your idea, and want to do the same in my office!

This is going straight to Pinterest. So cool.
I can never seem to motivate myself to make our house a home, the way that you do…even though I love the look & feel. For a variety of reasons, we don’t tend to stay in the same place for long, so I always feel like it’s not worth my time/money/energy. …but I’ve been doing that for almost 6 years now. I always feel like I don’t want to invest any effort until we own a home. So, what’s your thought process on it all? What motivates you to put in the effort/time/money(even if it’s only a little bit)? (I hope that all made sense) :)

      Hi Alisha…
Our philosophy is that your home or space you live in should be beautiful and inviting no matter how long you will be there. Now, that means different things to different people.

For some, it might be hanging a favorite photo and that’s all they need. Others might hang curtains, etc. We tend to do the whole she-bang ;-) It’s such a small investment of time and resources in the grand scheme of things. And so, so worth it. If you don’t LOVE where you spend the majority of your time…then life can be pretty bleak, no?

It’s quite easy to make dramatic changes without much investment/money, you just have to prioritize and then DO IT!

      Hope that helps!

    Inspired idea for your photies.

When my hubs and I lived in Cape Town, and our little house had been full of relatives and guests visiting, I always found the quiet and emptiness after they left a little disconcerting. Eventually, I found little routines and rituals which let me feel like myself again…sitting on the couch and eating some chocolate with a cup of tea (and sometimes having a bit of a cry). Laundering the linens and towels. Then taking a walk in the beautiful oak-lines streets. My version of your happy corner :-)

I did this with hemp twine–I also put up sweet cards I’ve received from people. I use mini-clothespins I found in the office section of Wal-Mart.

I like this idea… When I was living in Mexico I had a wall of thanks that everybody would write little things they were thankful for on. It was a good reminder of the blessings in our life. I’ve been longing for another Wall O’ Thanks ever sense… soon I hope it will become a reality.

It looks like you had a wonderful time with your family! I have a question about birthday presents… We are trying to minimize things in our house/lives, but we still want to get some presents for our kids for their birthdays. What type of gifts do you get for your girls?

    HI Sara,
I am wondering how you get prints of your ShakeIT photos. Whenever I try and order them they get cropped weird because of the size of the photo, including when I try and use mpix.com. Any tips on where I might be going wrong?
    Thanks!!!

I just started following your blog from a friend and I already love it. I’m going to have to go back and sneak a peak at all the traveling you did. One day I hope my family can do that! Hubby is a musician and well, you know how they go!
P.S. I totatlly love that clothes pin idea. I may borrow it in our future “baby room”!

    Hi,

This is rather unrelated to this post ;) I know you have done lots of road-travel, and I wondered if you have any good resources for ideas on how to eat healthfully while on the road, with a limited kitchen. I am planning a 4 month trip by myself, following my husband to re-supply him as he hikes the Pacific Crest Trail (plan is at least two years in the future). I don’t know what kind of travel vehicle I will end up with, but eating healthfully is a big concern and a big question mark for me!

Thanks for any info you can provide! I love your style of minimalism, it is so inspirational! :)

Reading your blog is such a bright spot in my day! Your joy is contagious, thanks for sharing it with all of us. I was inspired by this project, so I went and bought mini clothespins at Hobby Lobby. Can’t wait to hang it up!

On a side note, I wondered if you could share what your living room wall color is. I have been looking for a gray/putty/earthy color that wasn’t too cold, and I love yours and the way it looks in different lights! Thanks!
