Yarn Bombing the Backyard

I have long admired yarn bombing “installations” that I have seen around the country and decided that I would add a little color to my own backyard. I stand in awe of all of the yarn bombers who artfully and intentionally take their time to create these beautiful pieces for all to enjoy. BUT…as a busy mama of three littles, I didn’t want to spend my precious free time knitting for my tree. :)

So on my thrifting excursions over the last month, I have focused on rescuing discarded hand knit treasures.

And then I tied them all to my tree. And they make me happy.

*my favorite book on yarn bombing is this. love. and another gallery of knitted goodness here.

Love it!! So fun! What a great idea for something a little (or a LOT) quicker.

You’re such a clever and sweet mumma! I love what you’ve done to your tree! xx

    Brilliant idea using thrifted resources!

  • Rachel

Great idea! I love the color it adds to your view out the window.

  • Andrea

I can certainly see why that brings you happiness – right out your window!

that’s actually a really good idea!! i’ll have to do that with our tree out front so people can see it when they walk by. :) that is, if you don’t mind me taking a little inspo from you.

Very neat! I love that you rescued your discarded knitted treasures for this love on your tree. I was staring at the pile of forlorn scarves in my closet yesterday and wondered what to do with them. I think I’ll go put a few of them around some trees and poles. I’m not a busy mother of three, but I still don’t have time to attempt knitting for topiary. Thanks for the idea. :)

LOVE IT! I want to do that to our trees… how do you tie them on? I have several old knit scarves that I never use anymore. They are full of color and I think would look great on our big old pine tree.

PS my husband clears trees from power lines for work. So since he is a “tree worker” I showed him some pics of yarn bombing. Here we live on this beautiful lake with an awesome view BUT we have a utility pole right in the middle on the edge of our front yard. He told me I should yarn bomb the utility pole :)

Don’t leave up for too long…It will KILL the tree!! Arborist Bob (also a tree hugger)

    • Jen

How would it kill the tree, Bob? I’m interested to know because I never would have thought that.

I’ve never seen yarn bombing in person, but I think it’s pretty cool. Great idea to use thrift store knitted items! I’d never want to spend the time knitting for a tree either. :)

LOVE IT. We have a new park in downtown Dallas and there are yarn-bombed trees everywhere. Swoon. I wish we could yarn-bomb our entire neighborhood! So happy!

I, too, am obsessed with yarn bombing & guerrilla knitters! It’s such a wildly uplifting craft. I like your idea of thrifting for the knit pieces…I’ll have to start collecting them now & decorate our yard once the rainy weather abates. ^_^ Mb I’ll “slicker bomb” the trees, in the meantime. Lol.

To Jen and others…It creates a nest for nasty intruders to enter the tree and also keeps a higher moisture content in the area that will create disease. Ever see a tree with white paste around the base?..Keeps alot of the intruders out! Take care…Bob

Looks like wrapping utility poles is where it’s at then!

I’d love to know how long is “too long” for a yarn bombing to be on a tree. I know there are many that have been around for quite some time with no apparent damage. Good thing we don’t stay in one place very long…I’ll take my scarves with me ;-)

You are so cool! I do not believe I’ve read through a single thing like that before. So good to discover somebody with genuine thoughts on this subject matter. Seriously.. thanks for starting this up. This website is one thing that’s needed
on the web, someone with a little originality!

Howdi. Be grateful for penning this posting. Which often reduced the problem a great deal.
